Support to the Air Transport Sector in Suriname
The Inter-American Development Bank (IDB), in partnership with the Government of Suriname, is supporting the modernization of Suriname’s aviation sector through Project SU-L1071 – Support to the Air Transport Sector in Suriname.
This US$25 million investment program focuses on improving aviation safety, strengthening regulatory institutions, modernizing airport infrastructure, and enhancing Air Navigation Services (ANS) throughout Suriname.
The project represents an important step toward ensuring that Suriname’s aviation system meets international standards established by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) while supporting economic growth, tourism, and regional connectivity.
Project Objectives
The project has two primary objectives: Improve compliance with international aviation safety and security standards.
Improve the quality, resilience and reliability of Suriname’s air transport infrastructure.
By achieving these objectives, Suriname will strengthen its aviation system while improving operational efficiency and passenger safety.
Project Components
📡 Air Navigation Services (ANS)
Investment in modern communication, navigation, surveillance, and air traffic management systems to improve the safety, efficiency, and reliability of air navigation services.
⚖️ Institutional Strengthening
Enhancement of aviation oversight through stronger regulatory institutions, staff development, technical assistance, and improved governance.
📜 Legal & Regulatory Reform
Modernization of Suriname’s civil aviation legislation and regulations to align with ICAO Standards and Recommended Practices (SARPs)
🛡️ Air Accident Investigation
Support for establishing an independent Air Accident Investigation Authority to strengthen aviation safety and ensure compliance with ICAO Annex 13.ce.
